Bureau of Fire Prevention
The Bureau of Fire Prevention is headed by a Fire Marshal who supervises the inspections of buildings and businesses that, by New Jersey State guidelines, are categorized as "Life Hazard Use." These inspections ensure that all businesses operating in Rockaway Borough are fire-safe facilities. When there is an actual occurrence of a fire, it is the responsibility of the Fire Marshal to conduct an investigation to determine the cause and origin of the fire.
When residential homes are sold, the Bureau of Fire Prevention conducts routine inspections to insure that smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors are present. Call 973-625-FIRE to schedule smoke detector or carbon monoxide detector inspections, or to report any fire violations.
The Bureau annually presents programs promoting fire prevention to local schools.

Oxygen in a Fire
One of the greatest hazards to life that exists in a building fire of any magniture is the lack of sufficient oxygen.
Oxygen not only is essential for human life, but also is the key to supporting the life of a fire. When fire and humans compete for the limited amount of oxygen within a burning building, FIRE ALWAYS WINS!
Most fatalities are caused because of this. It is often referred to as smoke inhalation, but put in simpler terms, it is death by suffocation!
The dangers of oxygen displacement in a burning building, as well as other hazards including the presence of toxic gasses, the fire itself, the risk of explosion, building collapse, and electrocution, make reentering a burning structure a dangerous, if not deadly proposition.
We, the members of the Fire Service, are requesting that everyone install and maintain smoke detectors and practice fire escape plans in your homes and apartments.
Do your part to “get out and stay out” before firefighters have to come in! Help us to help you. Your life means everything to us!
